Laura was one of the more unique and creative people I ever knew. I met her in 1981 when she was Drew Eisenhauer's girlfriend. She quickly became a regular in the social group of friends who hung out at TOR in Columbia, Maryland. We were close for many years and we dated briefly from December 1984 to mid-1985.
Our friendship somehow survived the bad breakup, but I didn't see her much after 1986. We went to Mexico for a few weeks in 1988 and I visited her a few times in NY in the early 90's with my (now) wife Elisabetta. She moved away and eventually married in 1993.
We remained email friends until the summer of 1994, when for some reason or another (which I never knew) I stopped hearing from her.
I always imagined one day we'd be friends again, but tragically Laura took her own life in 2006.
After she moved to New York in 1984 we corresponded regularly by letter, because we couldn't afford to talk by phone. That was back when people used to do that kind of thing; until around 1990 when everybody moved to email.
It took a long time before I could look at these letters again. But she put so much of herself into them; they are so creative and rich with her unbridled personality that I know other people who knew her will appreciate seeing them.
It's all here, the good, the bad and the ugly. Some of it is gossipy, some is salatious, some of is painful and embarrasing to me. But I didn't censor for anybody's benefit including my own.
If anybody feels like communicating I'd be glad to hear from you: ggrant543@gmail.com or feel free to leave a comment on the message board.
